The Volvo XC40 Recharge is an all-electric luxury SUV that offers the latest technologies, but how much range can drivers expect from this EV?
The Volvo XC40 Recharge is a compact electric vehicle with the bodywork of an SUV. Although the EV offers practicality and a luxurious driving experience, how much range can drivers expect? The XC40 Recharge joins the growing list of traditional SUVs that now operate with an electric drivetrain. From expensive models like Tesla Model X and Audi e-tron to inexpensive models like Kia’s Niro EV, nearly every automaker already has an electric SUV model or is actively developing one.
The XC40 happens to be the flagship Volvo model to be built based on the compact modular architecture (CMA), a global mid-size unibody automobile platform formulated by automakers Geely and Volvo. The platform’s primary goal is to optimize interior space. The Volvo C40’s design is also based on this platform. Interestingly enough, the XC40 wasn’t always an electric SUV. In 2017, Volvo started making the XC40 a luxury crossover SUV fitted with gasoline and diesel engines. In 2019, the automaker released a plug-in hybrid variant, signaling a future shift to EV production. In 2020, Volvo launched a battery-electric version with the nameplate XC40 Recharge.

As more automakers venture into the development of EVs, consumers are presented with multiple options that make the selection process more difficult. However, factors like EV driving range should help households choose a vehicle that fits their current needs. Equipped with a battery capacity of 75 kWh, the Volvo XC40 offers up to 223 miles, which means this EV can easily compete with the Audi e-tron. However, an EV like the Tesla Model Y will pose a threat, especially when the vehicle offers more than 300 miles of driving range. While 223 miles is the official driving range of the XC40 Recharge, certain conditions can affect the EV’s range. For city drives in the cold, drivers are promised 210 miles of range. On a typical day, Volvo believes that the EV can deliver up to 420 miles of range for city driving. On the highway, more power is needed to tackle high wind resistance, and this applies more pressure on the EV’s battery. Usually, for highway driving, the XC40 is said to offer 300 miles of range. For cold climates, the output drops to 200 miles. For a combined drive in the city and on the highway, drivers should expect 360 miles of range, with 210 miles the maximum range when the temperature drops.
Overview Of The Volvo XC40 Recharge
The Volvo XC40 Recharge has a twin-motor configuration, an automatic transmission, and a front-wheel-drive system (FWD). Both motors combine to produce 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque. The XC40 can also accelerate from zero to 60 mph within 4.7 seconds. Charging the EV is easy since the XC40 Recharge features a combined charging socket containing AC and DC ports. Drivers should expect an 80 percent charge status within 32 minutes when using a DC fast charger. When using an AC power outlet, drivers should expect a full charge status within eight hours.
