Big Brother producers confirm that they spoke to the current houseguests about microaggressions, saying they all underwent sensitivity training.
Even though it hasn’t been an entire week, Big Brother season 24 is already causing controversy, with producers teaching the houseguests about microaggressions in the house. Big Brother 24 returned to CBS recently, with 16 new houseguests entering the game, where they are secluded from the outside world for 85 days. One houseguest will be evicted each week throughout the summer until the last one standing wins the $750,000 grand prize. The first live vote and eviction will take place on Thursday, July 14, when the eventful first week will finally come to an end.
During the live premiere of Big Brother 24, Daniel Durston, an Elvis impersonator from Las Vegas, won the first HOH competition and gained all the power. The houseguests quickly formed alliances to save themselves from being the first evicted. Taylor Hale, a former Miss USA contestant, was immediately ostracized and outcast by the rest of the house, particularly Paloma Aguilar, who convinced the rest of the house to turn on her. Taylor, a Black woman, was labeled by the other houseguests as “aggressive” and thinking that she would “blow up” if she was nominated, though there was no evidence to back that accusation up.

Big Brother producers confirmed to Variety that the houseguests were required to undergo sensitivity training before entering the house. Producers also said that they have spoken to the contestants about microaggressions toward other houseguests. Paloma and Jasmine Davis have been the root sources of bullying Taylor, but Monte Taylor, Joe “Pooch” Pucciarelli and Terrance Higgins have also been culprits, making up lies about her, talking about her behind her back and even using inappropriate language. Few houseguests have attempted to be civil to Taylor, leaving her alone for much of the Big Brother game, to the point where she was caught on camera sobbing in the bathroom.
Several Big Brother alumni have come out against the current houseguests and the producers of Big Brother for allowing this treatment of Taylor. Tiffany Mitchell, Hannah Chaddha and Azah Awasum, members of the famous Cookout alliance from Big Brother 23, passionately defended Taylor, which isn’t surprising given that their goal was to crown the show’s first Black winner. Black contestants, particularly Black women, have long been mistreated on Big Brother, and Da’Vonne Rogers and Bayleigh Dayton, alumni of the game who fall into this category, have shamed the other Big Brother houseguests for bullying Taylor.

Big Brother 24 has gotten off to a very rocky start, with fans and alumni calling out the show on Taylor’s behalf. It’s still unknown why Taylor became the punching bag for the other houseguests, but it’s clear that they want her out for personal reasons rather than the game. After the Cookout from Big Brother 23, it’s disappointing to see the houseguests targeting one of the few women of color and making her miserable. Houseguests like Paloma, Jasmine, Daniel and Monte are in for a rude awakening when they leave the Big Brother house, while Taylor will be universally celebrated and loved.
