Snapchat recently released an interactive AR experience called Ghost Phone. Here’s how to get started including finding the AR game on the app.
Snapchat has released a new AR-based game that allows players to hunt ghosts in their surroundings and using their phone’s camera. It is called Ghost Phone AR, and it is available across Android and iOS devices. Unlike Snapchat’s AR-based Lenses that enable users to click unique photographs and videos, the Ghost Phone AR game is interactive. It allows users to provide input by moving their smartphone or tapping on the screen.
Snapchat has launched many interactive experiences over the years, such as Snap Games like Bitmoji Tennis, Carrom Gold, and Ready Set Gold among others. To play these games, users can open a chat and tap on the rocket icon at the bottom right corner of the display. In the menu that appears, users can select from a list of Snap Games and Snap Minis, both of which provide a fun experience. While users can play most of the games independently, some require two players.

Snapchat’s Ghost Phone AR game is now available on the app. There are three ways to find the game. The first is via the Lens Explorer section on Snapchat. Open the app, and on the home screen, tap on the smiley to the right of the shutter button. Now, tap on the search icon at the top left, type “Ghost Phone” and the AR game should be available as the first result under Lenses. The second method entails opening the Snapchat Lens website and scanning the Snapcode with Snap Camera. On the same website, users will find a link to the Ghost Phone Lens. They can copy and share it with their friends as the third way, with those with the link able to tap it and access the AR game directly.
Playing Snapchat’s Ghost Phone
Once users have located the game, they have to follow the on-screen instructions to make progress. The game’s story involves finding what happened to the phone owner who disappeared mysteriously. At first, players have to tap on a phone screen that appears on the display, which will load the game. Users will then come across what looks like the interface of a mobile screen. Later, players will use their camera feed to look around for supernatural entities around them, created using Snap Lenses.

Ghost Phone AR has been built using Lens Studio and web-first game engine Playcanvas. Per Snapchat, it is a game where “players can discover the secrets of an abandoned phone and solve the supernatural mystery of what happened to the previous owner.“ However, after spending some time with Ghost Phone, users will realize that it is more like an interactive AR experience where Snapchat uses different types of Lens and themed visuals over the video feed. Users might also come across some advertisements while playing the Ghost Phone AR game on Snapchat.
