Lenovo’s upcoming foldable has been referred to as the Motorola Razr 3 so far, but an official announcement reveals it will be called Moto Razr 2022.
An official teaser from Lenovo has revealed that its upcoming foldable smartphone, which has so far been referred to as the Motorola Razr 3, will officially be called the Moto Razr 3. Lenovo acquired Motorola from Google in 2014, but rather than dump the Motorola brand, has kept it alive, launching new phones and tablets that feature Motorola branding alongside those that bear its own name too.
The new Moto Razr 2022 will be Lenovo’s third attempt at a foldable smartphone, and it will challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 which will be its biggest rival. Like Samsung’s upcoming foldable, the Razr 2022 should be available globally, unlike other clamshell foldables from brands like Huawei that are restricted to China.

Lenovo is yet to announce a launch date for its upcoming Motorola clamshell foldable smartphone but it has posted a teaser video on Weibo that provides a partial look at the device. The video, which was posted on the social media site by Jin Chen, GM of Lenovo China Mobile, not only shows some of the phone’s design features such as its dual rear cameras and larger cover display, but also reveals the marketing name. Since news of the phone’s development first surfaced, it has been referred to as the Motorola Razr 3 but the teaser has revealed that it will be called “Moto Razr 2022” when it launches later this year.
A Familiar Naming Scheme For Motorola
Lenovo’s decision to distinguish the upcoming phone from its predecessors by using the year it was released rather than a serial model name makes sense. Motorola uses the naming scheme for some of its high-end smartphones such as the Motorola Edge+ 2022 as well as mid-range ones like the Moto G Stylus (2022). It has also been reported that the upcoming successor to the Motorola Edge (2021) will launch as the Motorola Edge (2022).
While the Moto Razr 2022 is still a while away from launch, its key specs, some of which have been confirmed by the brand itself, have already become public knowledge. Its inner screen is reported to be a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a notch for a 32MP front-facing camera. Under its hood will be the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

Unlike its predecessors which had a single rear camera, the Razr 2022 will have dual cameras on the back which will reportedly consist of a 50MP main sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide camera. As seen on some Motorola smartphones, the secondary camera could also be capable of shooting macro photos. The phone will also feature a bigger cover display, and the teaser video has shown it will have a watch dial as its lock screen. Its battery capacity is still unknown but a recent report hints the Moto Razr 2022 will have a bigger battery than its predecessors.
