According to Architectural Digest, Patricia stated that working with Mario has always been a great adventure, and he described the mansion’s walls, which are coated in apple green paint, as “very uplifting, whether the day is cloudy or sunny.” For a long time, the 9,500-square foot landmark was used as a public library, but it was turned into an apartment. Later, it was restored to its historic glory by a local contractor, Richard Marks. The house was also honored at the Preservation Society of Charleston’s 2012 Carolopolis Awards, for outstanding historic preservation. The residence is certainly impressive, thanks to its exquisite décor. However, the grande dame Patricia, whom fans think doesn’t want to marry, had just one problem with it. She felt that the home was too dark. With the help of Mario, she was able to brighten things up, starting with the Haleh Atabeigi paint on the floor of the entrance hall, and a lively octagonal pattern based on Victorian tilework. To further lighten the space, the walls were faux-finished to resemble pale blocks of stone.

To give the house a touch of her signature style, Patricia furnished it with her favorite decorative elements, such as objects from her previous “buattafied” addresses. The master bedroom is an exact replica of Patricia’s former Long Island suite, including the cheery cornflower-blue–and-white fabric that is used throughout the space. Patricia says that the material makes her feel like she’s looking at the sea while she’s lying in bed. Before Patricia’s home was fully transformed into the impressive abode that it as today, it made its onscreen debut on Southern Charm, where Patricia’s son Whitney Sudler-Smith described Mario as, “the Dame Edna of decorating.”

With one look at Patricia’s imposing Charleston home, it is very obvious that Mario’s clients. including Southern Charm star Patricia, remain loyal to him for good reason. It is worth noting that Patricia has enlisted Mario on three previous projects, including Southerly, a 30-room Long Island, New York estate that she shared with her late husband, Arthur G. Altschul, before she settled down in Charleston.
