Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Jobs is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of the personal computer revolution along with former business partner Steve Wozniak. Jobs is also widely remembered for introducing the world to the original iPhone that revolutionized mobile phones and turned them into must-have consumer gadgets. Jobs passed away at the age of 56 in 2011 from complications related to pancreatic cancer.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded by U.S. Presidents to people who are said to have made a “meritorious contribution” to the United States in areas of culture, arts, science, sports, or politics. Alongside the Congressional Gold Medal, it is the highest civilian honor in the U.S. but is not limited to American citizens. It was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and has since been awarded to a number of scientists, activists, athletes, and business leaders. Some of the notable recipients include astronaut Neil Armstrong, President Ronald Regan, Pope John Paul II, singers Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen, actors Tom Hanks and Robert Redford, golfer Tiger Woods, and basketball legend Michael Jordon, among others.
