Hyundai’s all-electric Ioniq 6 streamliner comes with a retro design and ultra-modern technology, but how far does it go on a single charge?
Hyundai has launched its all-electric Ioniq 6 streamliner, but how far does it go on a single charge? The Ioniq 6 ‘Electrified Streamliner’ will go on sale in the U.S. early next year, but Hyundai is yet to confirm its price. The car comes with a 350 kW charger that the company claims can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes, which is identical to the claimed charging times for the Ioniq 5. Hyundai also says that the car supports both 400-V and 800-V charging infrastructures. While 800-V charging is standard, it can also accommodate 400-V charging without needing adapters or other additional hardware.
The Ioniq 6 is expected to compete with the Tesla Model 3 and comes with very similar dimensions. It is a tad longer than the Tesla but has the same height and width. However, the design looks straight out of the nineteen twenties and thirties, when streamlining was popular, and multiple models were released to satisfy demand. It is Hyundai’s first electric sedan and part of the company’s plans to fully transition from internal combustion engines to electric in the coming years. The company launched the Ioniq 5 late last year to a warm reception and has also shown off the Ionic 7 concept electric SUV that’s slated to debut in 2024.

The highlight feature of the Ioniq 6 is its massive range, with the Extended Range variant offering a WLTP-estimated 379 miles (610 km) on a single charge. It is a little more than the 374 miles that Tesla quotes for its Model 3 Long Range. According to Hyundai’s press release, the Ioniq 6 Extended Range will ship with a 77.4kWh battery and be available in either RWD or AWD versions. The standard model is said to come with a 53kWh battery. According to Hyundai, the Extended Range model will consume less than 14 kWh/100 km, making it one of the most energy-efficient EVs in the market.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 Features
While Hyundai is yet to confirm the exact specifications and features of the U.S.-bound Ioniq 6, some of the announced features for the global markets include lane-centering cruise control, collision avoidance, advanced driver assistance and OTA software updates. Another notable feature of the new car is the Dual Color Ambient Lighting that would allow drivers to customize the look and feel of the cabin by selecting from 64 colors and six pre-selected themes.

The Ioniq 6 comes hot on the heels of the Ioniq 5 crossover SUV, which has been well-received by both the automotive press and consumers alike. It is currently one of the most in-demand vehicles in its segment, offering a slew of features and technology, including Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. With the launch of the Ioniq 6, Hyundai will be hoping to replicate the success of the Ioniq 5, but it remains to be seen whether the bold design choice would impede that goal.
