An earlier report about the phone’s battery has been debunked, but can the Razr 3’s unknown battery capacity give it an edge over the Galaxy Z Flip 4?
When the Motorola Razr 3 finally arrives later this year, it may pack a bigger battery capacity than previously reported. Motorola is planning a new Razr foldable smartphone for 2022, which will have the same clamshell design as its predecessor. The phone is expected to be the rival to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 which should launch in August.
In addition to a new foldable, it has also been reported that Motorola is also working on a rollable phone that extends vertically into a taller device. Although no manufacturer has launched a rollable smartphone yet, a few of them, such as China’s Oppo and TCL, have demoed working prototypes with screens that extend horizontally. TCL’s own is capable of folding in a fashion similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and then extending the display after unfolding.

A Lenovo executive has labeled an earlier report about the battery capacity of its upcoming foldable smartphone as false. Taking to Weibo, Jin Chen, who is the General Manager of Lenovo Mobile China, refuted the report that the phone will have a 2800mAh battery capacity. He added that the info is incorrect, and the reported capacity is that of the previous generation, which is the Razr 5G. While it isn’t surprising that he didn’t reveal the battery capacity of the upcoming phone, the tone of his post hints at the Razr 3 packing a bigger battery than its predecessor.
A Fighting Chance Against The Galaxy Z Flip 4
Motorola has previously trailed behind Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Flip series with its last two foldable smartphones. The first foldable Razr, which was released in 2019, had a mid-range Snapdragon 700 series chipset and a 2800mAh battery. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip launched with a Snapdragon 855+ processor and a 3300mAh battery capacity. Similar issues plagued the Razr 5G as it, too, couldn’t match up to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. However, the Razr 3 may turn things around for Motorola in 2022. It has already been confirmed that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor will power the phone. This is Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile chipset at the moment, and it is the same one that will be present inside the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. In addition, the Razr will be paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, while Samsung is expected to offer the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.
Motorola’s next-gen foldable will also pack better cameras, as a leaked video has shown it wielding dual rear cameras. Its predecessors had a single rear camera. An earlier report revealed the camera configuration as a 50MP primary sensor paired with a 13MP secondary camera. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will have two 12MP rear cameras. Additional camera info provided for the Razr 3 is a 32MP front-facing camera which now sits inside a bigger 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Not only has its main display gotten bigger, but the cover display is also reported to have gotten a bump in size to make it more useful.

These specs already give Lenovo (Motorola) a better fighting chance against Samsung. However, with the actual battery capacity of the Razr 3 still a mystery, it is impossible to say which device wins, at least based on the spec-by-spec comparison. Lenovo has yet to announce a specific date for the phone’s arrival, save for its launch in 2022. Nevertheless, the good news is that, unlike the Huawei P50 Pocket, which is another clamshell foldable phone, the Razr 3 will be sold in the U.S.
