Subaru’s new electric Solterra crossover is built on the e-Subaru Global Platform, bringing improved stability and better driving dynamics.
The 2023 Subaru Solterra is a new luxury EV that features an interesting design architecture called the e-Subaru Global Platform. Announced last year, the 2023 Solterra is an all-electric SUV offering advanced performance, next-gen technology, and lots more. The EV joins the segment of electric SUVs that include the Tesla Model X and Volkswagen ID.4. The Subaru also competes with the Leaf, an EV developed by fellow Japanese automaker, Nissan. Being the first electric Subaru, it’s no surprise that the 2023 Solterra’s design is based on the all-new e-Subaru design platform. A joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, this may be the most technologically advanced Subaru yet.
Before the arrival of Subaru’s electric design platform, the Subaru Global Platform was the go-to choice for the Japanese automaker. With the platform, Subaru witnessed improvements in the design of its models, particularly in areas like strength and rigidity. The automaker was also able to attain a lower center of gravity for its vehicles. Interestingly, building most of the Subaru models with a universal platform increased flexibility and efficiency in production. Plus, Subaru could mass-produce units for its various models without needing to reconfigure them individually.

Subaru’s alliance with Toyota birthed the 2023 Solterra and a remarkable design architecture exclusive to Subaru EVs. To achieve the best results, Subaru combined its history of building all-wheel-drive technologies and its successful Subaru global platform with Toyota’s expertise in EV technology. The EV also features the Symmetrical AWD system which Subaru Global Media claims is the pinnacle of AWD technology. The e-Subaru architecture is designed to provide drivers with improved stability and handling when on and off the road. The Solterra EV can be described as a vehicle capable of delivering maximum comfort and practicality to drivers while emitting zero carbon to the environment. As a BEV, Subaru’s engineers positioned the 71.4 lithium-ion battery under the floor which enables the EV to boast features like a low center of gravity, high body strength, and increased rigidity.
E-Subaru Architecture Improvements
With the Solterra EV’s standard symmetrical AWD configuration, drivers can leverage the all-terrain abilities that this Subaru offers. The AWD system always provides stability and supplies optimum power to the wheels which increases traction and makes handling the EV better. Equipped with two electric motors placed in the rear and front, tire response to actions like turns and braking is excellent. Additionally, the 2023 Solterra comes with a unique X-Mode which increases the SUV’s alertness, especially when driving off-road. The X-Mode package features Hill Ascent and Descent Assist, allowing drivers to opt for their preferred traction setting depending on terrain.

Subaru also invests in the EV’s exterior, with a hexagon grille that demonstrates the BEV status of the Solterra. To assert the vehicle’s identity as an SUV, there are dynamic fenders that protrude from the inside. The low instrumental panel with top-mounted meters that form part of the 2023 Subaru Solterra’s interior are innovative and heighten the EV’s design.
