Kim Plath appears to be at the center of all the family drama on Welcome to Plathville. Whether she is directly involved in the drama or not, Kim has a way of making the issues about her on the show. The Plath family has been divided for the past few years, as Kim pushed away the older kids when the showed a desire to live outside of her rules. Though she has repaired her relationship with some of her kids, Kim has continued to perpetuate the drama over the course of the series.
Kim is the matriarch on Welcome to Plathville, and she has been accused of acting manipulative throughout the four seasons of the show. She went from keeping her nine kids isolated in rural Georgia, to suddenly allowing them to have access to everything they wanted, like social media and television. A major plot point of season 4 is Kim and Barry’s failing marriage, as Kim said she is no longer happy with him, and she has completely gone back on the rules she set years earlier.
Ethan once said on Welcome to Plathville that Kim was the neck that turned Barry’s head, meaning that she is controlling and the one who is making all of the decisions for the family. She is one of the reasons his marriage with Olivia Plath has been going through a rough patch, as they are still holding onto a time when Ethan did not stand up to his family for her. Kim has not been quiet about her dislike of Olivia, even saying that she is filled with evil spirits. She disliked Olivia for introducing Ethan to life outside of their isolated farm because she had less control over him.
Kim’s relationship with Ethan grew even more strained, as she forced him away from his younger siblings who were still living at home. Some Plathville fans called Kim selfish for those actions that hurt all of her kids, as Ethan did not talk to some of his siblings for several months. She also put a strain in her relationship with Moriah Plath, after she made Moriah’s first live performance about herself by showing up without permission and causing drama.
In Welcome to Plathville season 4, Kim’s mid-life crisis has caused even more family drama, as she suddenly decided she did not want to be married to Barry anymore. She started spending less time at home with her kids, even though she is also their teacher since they are homeschooled, to run her own dance studio. Kim left Barry and her daughter Lydia Plath to pick up the slack, while she had alone time at their rental properties. Kim is the one who started talking about divorce on Welcome to Plathville, and she has continued to divide her family with her actions on the show.
