The 2022 Kia Niro EV is a pretty good choice for those seeking a non-luxury electric vehicle, but how far can the car go on a single charge?
The Kia Niro EV is a non-luxury car designed especially for those seeking an affordable EV. The Niro EV shares the same design platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, an all-electric SUV. Interestingly, this isn’t the model’s debut year, considering that Kia has been developing electric vehicles since 2016. Although the previous models in the Niro fleet were either plug-in hybrid or hybrid vehicles, the chances of Kia making an all-electric version have always been high.
Today, the automobile market is witnessing an increased demand for EVs, and this has led popular automakers like General Motors and Mercedes-Benz to develop vehicles fitted with electric powertrains. Previously, EVs were thought to be solely designed for environmental sustainability, but that’s no longer the case. Recently, new EV releases have demonstrated automakers’ willingness to offer more perks like stylish design, improved storage space, and a longer driving range. Also, EVs are no longer confined to the pavement, with electric pickups like the GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T possessing a knack for off-road travel. EVs have gone mainstream and nearly every major automaker either has an EV model or plans to build one soon.

Driving range plays a critical role in helping consumers determine which EV to purchase, with charging stations yet to populate countries the way gas stations do. The 2022 Kia Niro EV promises up to 239 miles of driving range per full charge which is neither a let-down nor exceptional. Powered by an EV drivetrain, the Niro EV is capable of making 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque using a high-density lithium-ion polymer battery with a capacity of 64 kWh. The battery is placed under the vehicle’s floor. If drivers require more power, a simple push of the Sport Mode button should do the trick. The Niro is arguably designed for all seasons, especially winter. There’s a Cold Weather package that features a battery heater that optimizes charging speed and battery operation in cold weather. The package also comes with a heat pump that enables the EV to increase its driving range. An extra feature of the Cold Weather package is a heated steering wheel that allows the driver to feel warm whenever the temperature plummets.
Charging Options For The Niro EV
Kia offers multiple options for charging the Niro EV, making the process convenient for drivers. Drivers can access charging options either at home or on the go depending on their current needs. The standard 400V DC Fast-Charging System allows different charging levels. For example, drivers can use the Level 1 (120V) mode which is identical to a home outlet. There’s Level 2, a 240V outlet found mostly in public spaces and can be installed at home. The Niro EV is compatible with public DC fast-charging outlets capable of getting the EV’s battery to 80 percent within one hour and 15 minutes. Using a 100kW DC fast charger can provide the driver with extra 100 miles worth of range within 30 minutes of charging.

Niro EV owners can locate the nearest public charging station using the Kia Access app. The EV also possesses a regenerative self-charging feature that collects the kinetic energy that would have been lost when drivers decelerate or use the brakes. The feature utilizes the spent kinetic energy to recharge the battery. Following a partnership with ChargePoint, Kia Niro EV buyers will receive a ChargePoint Home Flex EV charger delivered from a registered Kia dealer or any other dealership.
